Sunny Days Ahead

The sun was warm but the wind was chill. You know how it is with an April day.

When the sun is out and the wind is still, You’re one month on in the middle of May.

But if you so much as dare to speak, a cloud come over the sunlit arch, And wind comes off a frozen peak, And you’re two months back in the middle of March.”

- Robert Frost, Two Tramps in Mud Time, 1926

It’s April and the days seem longer, when the sun shines past 5 in the afternoon and the memory of last year’s recession keeps getting hazier and hazier. We look forward to the bright days ahead with belief that the dark days are behind us.

The Philippines Independence Day Council (PIDC) held their induction party last March to a packed crowd at Studio 8. It is a sign of good things to come.

For Bicolanos in the Philippines and here, they are thankful disaster was averted when Mayon volcano did not erupt as anticipated.

Filipinos back home are busy enjoying the spectacle that is the election. Lies, lies and more lies are in the air. But who cares as long as they bring the entertainers to their campaign rallies.

Here, signs of community life are beginning to show. Ads for concerts are starting to appear. Calls for contestants for Beauty pageants by different organizations are being heard. Invitations to dinner-dances are being sent. And the hustle for sponsors for summer events should be in full swing by now.

And at the last minute, the Nora Aunor concert was cancelled. I feel bad for the people who bought tickets in advance. And I feel equally bad for the promoters of upcoming concerts like Sarah Geronimo and Ogie and Regine. It will make it harder for them to sell tickets in advance because people will buy tickets on the day of the concert. You’ve got to have a strong heart to be in this business.

“If not for the same-day, last minute ticket buyers, we would have been in trouble,” said Joselito Ronquillo about the Sharon Cuneta concert he promoted last year. Because of last minute ticket-buyers, the Sharon Cuneta concert was a resounding success.

And so was the AND1 concert of Gary Valenciano and Martin Nievera which was promoted by Rene and Neneng Maalihan.

According to sources, Nora Aunor was not feeling well and flew back to the United States. However, a blind item on the internet on the same day that her concert was supposed to be held claimed that “she snubbed her own concert - AGAIN.” News really travels fast. Her supposed Toronto concert was the evening of March 20. I read the item March 20 also.

Sarah Geronimo’s concert will be on June 11 at the Metro Concention Centre. The promoter is Joselito Ronquillo, the same promoter of Sharon Cuneta last year. He also told me that the cancelled concert of Nora is re-scheduled for April 17. We’ll see.

By the way, the FCT President’s ball is on this year on April 24 which is the same night as PIDC’s Mrs. Philippines 2010 pageant at the Rembrandt banquet hall.

Enjoy the spring weather when it is neither hot or cold and the breeze feels like a sign of good things to come.
