Glamourous Nights

“The life of a man consists not in seeing visions and in dreaming dreams, but in active charity and in willing service”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“If you haven’t any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble.”

Bob Hope

The Canadian Aid Relief Project held it’s annual Bayanihan Ball at the Fairmont Royal York last month. This year’s ball was bigger and better than last year. It had a silent auction and a live auction. All proceeds of CARP, which was founded by Dr. Francisco Portugal, goes to funding the medical missions to the Philippines.

On April 24, I covered the Filipino Centre Toronto’s President’s Ball while society lensman Ariel Ramos coverd the Mrs. Philippines pageant of Philippine Independence Day Council. it was still early so I went to the PIDC Mrs. Philippines pageant at Rembrandt first and managed to wangle a dinner of delicious roasted chicken wrapped in phyllo with mushrooms folllowed by dessert of ice cream. An old friend, Roy Start, media man and PIDC officer kept me company. Chair Rosemer Enverga, with husband Jun was making sure the night goes without a problem. PIDC President Minda Neri was nowhere to be found.

I arrived at the Fairmont Royal York to cover the Filipino Centre Toronto’s President’s gala in the middle of President Linda Javier’s speech. Community leader Dr. Vicky Santiago was happpy with the results of the auction. For the third time in a row, Rey Tolentino and Pauline Chan emceed the program. FCT PRO Aida Orazio told me the day after that they were expecting Minda Neri to follow after the Mrs. Philippines apgeant. She never showed at the FCT gala also. Hmmm...

Anyway, both affairs were a picture of glamour, charity and gaiety.
