It was a smashing success. The place was sold out.
The show started at 8 o'clock. After 5 front acts including Martha Joy, 30 minutes has elapsed. I thought there were still 4 front acts to go, as stated in the poster. It turns out they were going to be used as in-between performers when Sarah changes costumes. She had a total of 5 changes. The other performers used in-between were Anton Alvarez, Charlie Green, John Prats, Erik Santos and Jimmy Marquez.
The moment everyone has been waiting for has arrived. Sarah's entrance was greeted by shrieks of excitement. She followed up that number with Black Eyed Peas' "It's a good day."
She also had a dance and song number where the beat reminded me of Michael Flatley's Irish step dancing routine but Sarah and company danced it to a hip-hop number.
What made the show enjoyable was that the songs chosen by musical director Louie Ocampo were all familiar to as many people as possible and well-loved. It is also good that they were not limited to Sarah's songs. There was the "Ewan" song by the APO, first popularized by Sharon Cuneta when she burst into the scene as a cute 14 teener. Here, Sarah teams up with Charlie Green. His duets with Eric were classics like "Maalaala mo Kaya," "Saan ka man," "Ngayon at kailanman," "Pangako sa iyo."
As she was singing her part in the second song in the medley of songs duet with Erik, a steel pipe fell at the back of the hall that was heard inside the concert hall. Sarah couldn't contain herself and started laughing.
"May pusa," Eric deadpanned.
And Sarah was reduced to laughing she couldn't continue singing, she slumped down and sat on the stage while Erik adlibbed another line.
"May hinahabol na daga."
Eric helped her up.
"Sayaw na lang tayo," he said.
Kudos also to the production staff for controlling the crowd from rushing forward and staying there during the concert. They also controlled the media from congregating in front of the stage, thus, preventing them from blocking the view of the VIP's. There were enough of the volunteer security staff to make sure these two situations did not happen. They also made sure that the media resorted to a hit and run style of taking pictures.
In some concert, the lower-paying patrons rushed in front to grab higher-paid seats. This was impossible here. There were no empty seats to grab.
Oh, I would like to THANK Tess Cusipag of Balita very much for making my job a lot easier than it normally would have been. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
The concert ended at 11:30. That was 3 and a half hours of musical entertainment.
The concert was produced by Dr. Francis Rementilla, Ruth and Joselito Ronquillo and Sonny Baluyot.
You produced a very entertaining concert in Sarah Geronimo's Record Breaker.
Sarah with Charlie Green.
Erik says to Sarah "Magsayaw na lang nga tayo" when Sarah cannot control her laughter in the middle of a duet when apipe fell at the back of the hall that was head in the concert hall.
