Day of the Assumption

The day of the Assumption was celebrated with a Pistahan on the grounds of the Our lady of the Assumption Chruch on Bathurst street. Organized by the Archdiocesan Filipino Catholic Mission, lasting two days on August 14-15, the small size lent itself to a cozy and intimate affair.

“The picnic is in celebration of the Our Lady of the Assumption,” said Jun Enverga.

Performances by local artists kept the crowd entertained. Food was provided by vendors from local Filipino restaurants. Clothes and crafts were for sale. Balikbayan boxes by Forex were available. If you want to subscribe to homegrown Filipino channels, GMA-7’s Pinoy-TV was available. For remittance iRemit was there with Robert Domingo to entertain inquiries also.

Father Romy Tolentino and two other priests even sang “To all the girls I’ve loved before,” which made for some awkward and funny moments when they had to change some of the lyrics at the last second.

At 8 in the evening, the action moved to the basement of the church for some jamming session.

Filpino Centre Toronto Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

Filipino Centre, Toronto honored the volunteers with an Apprciation Dinner last August. FCT, headed by President Ms. Linda Javier and board chairman and philantrophist Dr. Victoria Santiago has been very active in the community with different projects. Mayoral candidate George Smitherman graced the occasion. Smitherman has been a defender and supporter of the centre since it started, giving $50,000 in helping refurbish the building. But the most memorable part of the evening is Linda Javier’s chicken (specially the atay and gizzard parts), cooked in gata, which is delicious. Thus, I can add her name as one of the reasons why I have been gaining weight. Not that it is getting noticeable. But Jun Enverga did. As did newsman Carlos Unas.
